I had an apartment once with direct roof-top access. I lived on the milky edge of Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights. The view in any direction was both exhilarating and solemn, as if I was beholden to the cityscape for a debt I was owed but was more than willing to forfeit. You could say Brooklyn is quite the magical beast, a living and breathing entity all its own, an extension of Manhattan and possessing its own vivacity. A trio of players forming Moonwalker, frontman Rob Crews, guitarist Mark Neidhardt and bassist Bryan Witt, somehow capture the borough’s cataclysmic glow with “Conquer,” a new single that fractures, explodes and flips the eardrums.

“No one can stop me now,” Crews growls, beating the air with his fists as a way to declare his role in this high-stakes gamble. The production burns at the core, and the power-pop ’80s synths act as a tank of gasoline, gushing down onto their faces and igniting a bonfire the likes we’ve never witnessed. The accompanying music video, premiering today, doesn’t hesitate to further highlight Brooklyn’s textured fingertips and octane-heavy allure. “The city of Brooklyn has had a big influence on our writing lately,” says Crews to B-Sides & Badlands, “and we thought shooting the video in various parts of the city would perfectly match the vibe of the song.”

Across a brisk two-minute, 28-second runtime, Crews pounds his way down a Brooklyn street. He’s got a tiger eye, and he won’t go down with wrecking havoc on his way to the tippy top. “Dare you to stop me now,” he sings before a Steven Tyler-worthy howl escapes his lungs. “I’m taking it over,” rings conclusively on the monstrous hook. I won’t get in their way (and neither should you) ⎯⎯ that’s for sure.

Moonwalker’s debut album, Vol. 1, drops Sept. 7 on Standby Records.
