To show empathy is to open your heart. The world needs a little bit of that these days; just a pinch can go further than you might imagine. Head-strong and fervent, Irish singer-songwriter Con Murphy extends a warm hand with his new single “Chocolate Pills,” a cosmic dose of compassion dressed up with gaseous ’80s synths and jungle drums. “Take a look inside my head / There’s demons underneath my bed,” he underlines in red marker. He then implores the listener to take a stroll in his own sneakers, discarding preconceived notions for understanding. In that way, we might come closer to truly getting inside his head.

He delivers a simple but elegant truth on the hook. “I will give you chocolate to try and ease your mind,” he sings, waxing smooth and poetic. “You’re staring up the corridors / No where else to hide / And when you leave, I’ll still be here at the end of the day…” Murphy is unhurried, and that doesn’t mean it does heave out a hefty, tremendous vocal urgency in its own way. It’s somehow comforting, and troubles seem not as ominous and insurmountable as they once were. At least for now, relief descends like the crescent moon over a freshly-budding harvest.

Murphy makes it his mission to impart vital bits of wisdom in his work. “If you can use your art, your words, your personality and your humanity to make a positive impact on another, do it,” he tells B-Sides & Badlands of the core intent of the song. While falling in line with his 2017 debut EP, The Fjord, “Chocolate Pills” aims for a more robust progression. The keys and drums lure you in with vibes on vibes on vibes, and his voice keeps you reeling in uncontrollable jubilation.

Murphy is set to support rock group Aslan at the Royal Theatre in Castlebar, Ireland this Saturday (Aug. 18) and play the Electric Picnic Music & Arts Festival next month (Sept. 1). Set time TBD.
