My Horror Anatomy: NEO 10Y turns love into hypnotic art
The pop artist details five horror films that have formed their life and art.
Welcome to My Horror Anatomy, a terrifying series in which artists and creators dissect their five most influential horror films.
Both light and darkness radiate from NEO 10Y‘s new single “Spiritual Viagra.” One Halloween night, an unexpected love stepped into frame, electrifying and transformative. Then, they turned it into tantric art—the kind that seeps into your soul and moves you, changes you, hypnotizes you. “When you smiled at me, I came alive,” the artist sings. He circles his voice over each syllable, as though they’re an otherworldly being sent to earth to ignite a reckoning. And it’s one helluva reckoning.
“I want to take you home ’cause I don’t have a clone,” sings NEO 10Y through parted lips, a hushed whisper barely escaping their lungs. “You can be my movie star / And I’ll be your spiritual viagra.” The romantic entanglement is far more than sexual. It’s two orb-like souls connecting on a deeper, more intriguing level. NEO 10Y is simply a vessel to relay the much grander picture.
Below, NEO 10Y shares their five horror films that have molded their life and art—as well as the story behind “Spiritual Viagra.”
The Craft
I have always stanned this movie. I don’t think I ever related to anything more when growing up. For me, as a non-binary kid, the characters in ‘The Craft’ embody this fierce oneness with the universe. From when they summoned Manon to when they did the levitation, and even the darker elements, I felt so connected. When all the boys at school were playing football, I used to run around with my anorak as a butt cape pretending to be a witch, so I definitely have a deep seated connection with ‘The Craft.’
Jennifer’s Body
It’s the fierce anti-patriarchal energy that Jennifer exuded that really drew me in. The character is incredibly multi-dimensional, and the connection she had with Needy always gave me the vibe of a cute queer relationship. I also love the cinematography and how profoundly underrated Megan Fox’s acting performance is. Iconic.
American Psycho
Ok so this is amazing, but the night that I am singing about in ‘Spiritual Viagra,’ I met and fell in love with someone who was dressed exactly as Patrick Batemen from ‘American Psycho.’ That’s where the lyrics, “You can be my movie star and I’ll be your…Spiritual Viagra” comes from! It was Halloween, and a night full of deep synchronicities, and I have always found the character of Patrick Batemen so attractive. I love the way he cares for himself, I know he would appreciate the opening lyric of the song “My favourite person, well it’s me…”. As a movie, I adore the dialogue, his obsession with Phil Collins, who has an amazing soundscape and the confidence and charisma that he exudes, at the same time as being so tortured. I relate to that, but not the murder part.
Idle Hands
A teenage version of me really relates to ‘Idle Hands,’ because I was very much like Devon Sawa’s character Anton growing up! I feel like the film almost hit me as a message to be less idle… It’s also quite a light hearted film, and I think you will notice a theme with my choices that my taste in horror is quite comedy!
Ma
I think there’s a lot of relatability between anyone who has been persecuted in their lives and the character of Ma. I am a hot goddex now, but I was definitely bullied as a kid and outcast. Even today, I still get abuse from anti-vegans, Trump stans, bigots on the Internet, etc., so I guess I relate to how she was an outsider and victimized which drove her to insanity. I love how unhinged she was and how Octavia Spencer portrays her. The cinematography lends itself to comedy, as well, maybe unintentionally, but I love the film, and it makes me laugh!
