Premiere: On the Tip of Your Tongue severe ties from the past on new song, ‘Cheers’

The pop-punk five-piece eye their sophomore effort with a late-summer jam.

Cutting ties with the past can be uncomfortable. Even when it comes to bad habits or toxic friendships, letting things go can feel like you’re losing a part of yourself. And you might be right. Severing from hurt, or even cycles you’ve long outgrown, takes an immense amount of courage and awareness. In doing so, you’ll soon uncover a new place in the sun for yourself. Punk-rock five-piece On the Tip of Your Tongue resolutely trim away the frayed edges of their lives, and their new song “Cheers,” premiering today, not only depicts their entire journey to-date but serves to set a fresh trend moving forward.

“You walk in the door / I see you cross the main room’s floor / Just like you’d done before but never did anymore,” lead vocalist Matteo Rosa scrawls on the opening line. From the start, he firmly roots his feet to the earth, immovable and towering, and it immediately becomes clear he isn’t backing down. “And you broke the social norm / When you moved away from home / We all begged you to stay, but you had to get away from where everyone knew your name.”

“And I said cheers / You don’t have to hang around here,” he powers on the hook. With a swift confession, he slices the cord, and the past falls away as nothing but a ghost in his rearview. The band ⏤ also comprised of Shane Byrd (lead guitarist), Destiny Smith (bass), and Zach Cenate (drums) ⏤ weaves an intensely electrifying blanket of sound, wrapping around Rosa’s quirky, delightfully cheeky vocal tone.

On the song, Rosa shares with B-Sides & Badlands over email: “This song is so well loved amongst our fanbase that it is almost synonymous with us as a band. It represents the very formation of the band, and it really feels like our final link to the garage days of our silly little project.”

Out of the Nashville scene, On the Tip of Your Tongue eye their sophomore effort, There and Back Again, tentatively slated for fall. The forthcoming set follows 2019’s Sad Songs About Girls debut.
