Wes MacDonald is a hypnotic creature, slithering between grimy garage-rock and blues. You never know quite what to expect. Known professionally as Terry Ohms, a moniker carrying a certain rootsiness to it, MacDonald has notched eight studio records, including his brand new one called Smooth Sailing Forever, a magnetic and moody lineup completely recorded in quarantine. It’s certainly par for the course these days, but songs like “Gentlemen Caller,” mangling musicality that really knocks you for a loop, firmly plant in uncertain emotional turmoil.

“I heard you had a gentleman caller / One of those backwoods injury lawyers / He gave you a tiger cub and got you in the country club,” his lyrics paint a cinematic scene. His voice is jagged, piercing the skin even, but evenso, there’s a soothing quality about him. He drives you forward into a cloud of story smoke and leaves you to breathe it in for yourself.

He continues, “And a swank uptown apartment and totally free city wide parking / And a whole lotta nice things that don’t amount to much / You heard I got caught up in jazz, yea / It helps me relax and not dwell on the past.”

The visual, premiering today, cobbles together various archival footage.

Smooth Sailing Forever drops Friday (August 14) on Cornelius Chapel Records.
