Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.

A soul at unrest is is a maniacal beast, indeed. The clattering of veins and a heart that just won’t sleep are symptoms of unthinkable anguish ⏤ the kind to leave bruises and blotches on the brain. If we’re lucky, we can steal out the backdoor and find a trigger to release us from the pain. Swiss alt-pop creator Organ Mug (real name Morgan Hug) attempts a trapeze act to balance it all out with a creamy, minimalistic dream sequence found in his video for “A Somewhere Place,” an ambient, Signs-esque visual built on mood and a slow-burning atmosphere.

“I have a place where I can go / A place nobody knows / It’s the best place to stop by,” he sings in soft-spoken flickers. “Of course, there’s a lot more…” The parched cornfields float away from his feet, and the ground seemingly begs to be forgiven. But as he navigates the crops, feeling the crunch of wheat and dirt under his rubbered soles, Hug finds nutrients in the air itself. Replenishment hangs in unseen bubbles in the sky, and before you know it, his skin becomes one with the earth’s crust.

The video, as cinematic and grand as you might expect, is directed by Geoffroy Dubreuil and slips just under the skin to be uncomfortable, yet entrancing. “Silent feet on the floor / And there’s a lot more…” he whispers, a reverent choir of voices and production echoing like light rays behind him through shards of stained glass. Hug’s performance is drenched in subtlety and allows the listener to be bathed from head to toe, as if in a baptismal ritual down on the river banks.

“A Somewhere Place” samples his forthcoming EP, Here and There, out February 2 on Irascible Records.
