Life is serendipitous.  It’s a cosmic swirl of seemingly random events that crash like wrecking balls into each other. Each encounter and conversation act as small particles to a much grander orbit, circling our bodies in a sweeping, magnetized movement. Barreling forward with sloshy growls and winks, surf-rock’s Patsy (the solo project to mastermind Patrick Carroll, most known for performing in indie-rock outfit Les Racquet) sticks out his thumb and hitches a ride across the boundless human existence. His new song “Fucking Amazing” leans into the side-pocket of life’s poetic mundanity, celebrating the fleeting, everyday moments as monumentally life-affirming.

“At any time, you can get into a car and drive to the airport / Get yourself a flight, and then, overnight you’ll be in Newark / Just guitar and strings and not much other things / My head is riding on the clouds/ That’s fucking amazing,” he sings, opening the song instantly to a rather unconcerned perspective. Within such plainspokenness, there is expressive tenacity for really, truly living. He shoots from the gut and rips his spirit from his chest, putting it on display as a shiny trophy. He’s disengaged from the weight tragedy, pain or sorrow, but allows the listener to come along for a ride, no strings attached. Carroll crafts his work with a needle-point for simplistically-profound lyricism, wrapped inside earthy, bubbly production. So, it’s no wonder he’s a shape-shifting trailblazer on the Rockaway Beach music scene, opting out of the typical for the explosively unusual.

He then depicts another otherwise unremarkable episode on the second stanza. “And then while you wait at the gate you can look at strangers / And in the cigarette lounge, you’re gonna fumble around and then you ask for a lighter / It starts with just a spark oh but then you start to talking and now you’re next of kin / That’s fucking amazing,” he draws out in vibrant strokes. It is predictably within those layers of living that we recover our sensitivity to the world around us; we feel most alive when we don’t trouble ourselves so much with trying to live. Carroll imparts his ability to simply be in the world, and that’s fucking amazing, man.

The accompanying visual, premiering today, is a ripe embodiment of his intoxicating charm. Filmed by Laura Nesci, the clip splits between peeking into a private band rehearsal and weaving in and out of various muted locations, the aesthetic grainy and shifty as homemade footage typically is. “The song is about phenomenon. The video is its coincidental companion; exactly where we were and what we were doing as phenomenon played with and around us,” Carroll tells B-Sides & Badlands. He’s a man of few words; instead, he just lets the music scream from the mountains, casting dust and rock to tumble down and away from his feet.

“Fucking Amazing” samples his new self-titled EP, out March 1 via Broad Channel Records.
