Taste Test: Rebekah Hawker spins to the next ‘Round of Fools’
The Canadian folk singer-songwriter handles her heartbreak with great tenderness on a new song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
The sting of heartbreak can stop you in your tracks. You’re forever replaying that moment over and over and over again as a homemade video reel. For better or for worse, you sink lower into your self and almost sequester from the outside world. At least for a time. Ontario folksmith Rebekah Hawker nearly loses herself completely, as the aftermath kicks up a whirlwind of dust that then rips right through your heart’s onion-peeled ruins. “I’ll still try my luck at the next round of fools,” she sings. She situates her pain at the forefront, yet she doesn’t allow it to forever damn her to an existence of self-loathing and darkness. “Round of Fools” is a sobering dissection of her hitting rockbottom and the strength that’s required to climb back up. The light hits her skin, and she’s replenished anew.
“Round of Fools” is a sampling of Hawker’s debut EP, Careful Women, out everywhere August 23.
