An amber light tussles overhead, casting cool silhouettes and illuminating the flirtatious push and pull between could-be lovers. Honeyed lager sloshes in glasses, and conversation continues to bubble. Clearly infatuated, you begin to surmise things might lean to something more. But you can never really be sure until the lights come on. Bluesy singer-songwriter Robert Chaney exposes that inner struggle with his plaintive new song. On “Before I Go,” he flips through an inner monologue of longing, lonesome, and his unshakably introverted ways. “Before I go, won’t you say you love me,” he sings. “Won’t you please just let me know.” His desires burn as hot coals, yet the song remains somber, inwardly focused. He may never actually reveal such declarations out loud, but for now, we have this song.
