Art is even more crucial these days. With a pandemic still suffocating our way of life, songwriters are especially turning to their craft to express deep concerns about existence, uncertainty, and even death. Americana singer-songwriter Sam Burchfield uncovers renewed hope amidst throes of tragedy with his latest entry. “When We Get Through” is not without a glowing sense of melancholy, though, perhaps embedded into the way he curls his syllables. The melody hangs low like a willow tree’s sweet tears. “I’m going to meet you where I left you / Hold you in my arms, so I won’t forget you / Well, I promise, we’ll meet again / When we get through,” he promises. The shroud might still drape dark, somber, and weary, but it’ll fall away soon enough.
