Taste Test: Brit Taylor’s heart is way too broken with her debut single, ‘Waking Up Ain’t Easy’

The country newcomer impresses with her outstanding debut.

You never know what bottoming out feels like until you’ve had a heartbreak. It can send you careening with no place to land. Country newcomer Brit Taylor depicts such a purgatory with her debut single. “Waking Up Ain’t Easy” rips the style right out of the ’60s, a silky, sterling waltz that fits snuggly alongside Patsy Cline, and her voice is just as delicate but drenched in her pain. “Hey, sun, please don’t come up,” she pleads from the outset. Her heart is too fragile, too broken to go on. “Waking up ain’t easy / It’s hard enough just breathing / Without you, I can’t face another day,” she cries into her pillow. It’s too soon, and it all seems to much. But like most things in life, it’s a temporary transition to something else. For now, however, she must deal with the pain.
