People are ghosts on the streets. By and large, we are all culpable of ignoring the misery that is only piling up right before our very eyes. Forget the fake news; the truth is on our way to work in the morning or outside the coffee shop or down on the street corner. We are blind, even numb, to it. Americana firestorm Sammy Kay has had about enough of the complicity, and so, he sends up a flair with his song, “Sweet Cecilla.” His coarse, velcro whisper skitters on the eardrums, and you can’t help but be severely reminded of your own role within a dying world. “Tell me about your life,” he turns the conversation outward in a fervent display of empathy and real understanding. Kay’s resolve to not make it about himself is refreshing, and you pair that with a superbly raw performance, and music just might change the world yet.
“Sweet Cecilla” anchors Kay’s new album, civil/WAR, out everywhere October 4.
