The Singles Bar: Samuel Proffitt snags Yoke Lore’s demo for earth-quaking ‘Stringsnoise’
The musician-producer goes for the throat with a minimalist new pop track, featuring Yoke Lore.
Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.
Carved onto paper, as the snow peppered a remote cabin in someplace Maine, “Stringsnoise” crackles in the sizzling oranges and blood-reds of the embers in his heart. Samuel Proffitt, a music man with a proclivity for stacking mood on gut-wrenching emotions, that seem to drip like a fresh rain upon a forest’s soft greenery, evokes the icy, yet warming, touch of the Eurythmics. He certainly makes sure to splash his foggy compositions with trusty and slick modernisms, but he never sacrifices such brush strokes for the tragically poetic.
“You can wait through the hours and days for the dark nights to find you / Silicon weights on your neck every day don’t trigger the good man inside you,” murmurs Yoke Lore, whose original two-minute banjo-based demo served as the song’s foundation. “Make it hot sweat, feel it in your chest / Put it in a body maybe that will save us / Before you get a heart, you gotta get taken apart.” His vocals fall apart within the song’s sweltering breath, and it seems that his aching howls are all for nought. But in escaping into the throbbing pain in his chest, which is caked with tears and sweat, he reemerges with a thicker and more stoney exterior with which to combat the unknown that awaits him.
The ascension into the heavens is a long, tiresome one, and you welcome the wounds you’ll acquire along the way. The love, the bliss, the sheer passion you once felt on your skin was worth having it stolen away from you. You’ll never forget those days, but you knew it was bound to fall apart eventually. “Stringsnoise,” which casts its musical touch points into suffocating darkness, pinned with frantic, minimalist percussion, seems to have a life of its very own. And that’s enough.
