Women have to deal with a whole lotta bullshit in the patriarchal system. It’s a man’s, man’s, man’s world, but women are absolutely thriving these days and reclaiming what should have been theirs from the start. Americana singer-songwriter Sarah Lee Langford has endured her share of hardships, and she hasn’t for one second kowtowed to the powers that be. Instead, she rises triumphant and stronger then ever, especially on her new song “Big Women,” paired with an equally-empowering music video, premiering today. “Cut a little of your hair, baby / It’s me that makes you strong / Once I get to know your weakness / You won’t last very long,” she barks, busting the door down on the opening lyric.

On the second verse, she further speaks her mind. “Don’t try to put me in my place / Cause I cut those apron strings,” she sings, burying all the turmoil in the cold, hard ground. “You gotta look until you find me / The devil’s in the little things.” Her voice is flighty and wondrous, tempting you into her perspective with a calming sharpness, angelic and very rooted to the pain. She tosses up her flare gun on the hook, “You don’t like strong women / With their love running wild / You just sit on your temptations / Until they take you for a ride…”

A drum kit slowly bubbles beneath her, never pulling focus but simply guiding the emotional links onward and upward. Langford is the bull horn that uproariously calls the listener to action but does so in a way that is simply patterned in the truth. The visual also stars Angela Evans and Katie Thompson and documents their endurance through the workplace, their charm and spirits as human beings rising to the top as smooth cream. “Big Women” is a timely and potent performance and one of true, gritty heart.

On the song and video, Langford writes to B-Sides & Badlands over email: “A ‘Big Woman’ is any kind of tough, resilient badass woman,” she says. “Those featured in this video are thriving in a man’s world and living life to the fullest.”

“Big Women” is the latest single to Langford’s new album, Two Hearted Rounder, out everywhere November 8 on Cornelius Chapel Records.
