Time becomes a cathedral of our lives. As we grow older, and hopefully far wiser, we often find ourselves basking in a vibrant stained glass mirror and remembering many of our former expeditions. Folk legend Shawn Colvin takes a literal approach in rearranging her youth and what that all means now. With the acoustic reinvention of “Ricochet in Time,” originally recorded 30 years ago, she combs through the beauty, as much the tragedy, of her life as a working musician. “I wanted to know if dreams would lie / You said they would try and I / Said let them / You just let them,” she carves her sturdy signature into the words. A lonesome acoustic guitar washes at her feet; she draws sorrow’s weight and its release nearer to her chest. Her scars have long healed and soaked into her new shell, yet there’s a tremendous amount of pain still clinging to her tender vocal reeds.
“Ricochet in Time” (acoustic) anchors the re-issue of Colvin’s landmark 1989 album, Steady On, out later this year.
