Taste Test: Sofi Gev tells herself to ‘Stay Awake’
The singer-songwriter rallies herself out of a sleepy state.

Depression felt like a cold nestled deep in her bones. Its stranglehold was unconquerable, so much so that fatigue soon set in. Sofi Gev found herself lethargic and literally unable to keep her eyes open. The singer-songwriter returns to her high school days of wandering through life for a new song, appropriately titled “Stay Awake.” While she continues juggling these issues, she’s now for more self-possessed to sing about it. “And I will try to feel the sun on my skin even if I’m the only one,” she encourages. The production waxes blurry-eyed, and a rain stick’s gentle trickle boosts her mood and state of being even more. It’s exhilarating and wonderfully soothing.
