Premiere: Stacey Kelleher cherishes her voice with new song, ‘Broke In’
The singer-songwriter learns to embrace those things that make her different.
Stacey Kelleher chooses not to see her pain as brokenness. Rather, those scars are simply signs she has lived and survived and now thrives. With her new song “Broke In,” the indie-pop singer-songwriter reclaims the narrative and declares that she’s just “24 years-in-the making,” she sings before admitting that “standing up here makes me feel so naked sometimes.” But “these scars and imperfections are so beautiful,” she reminds herself. “I’m not broken, no I’m just a little broke in.”
“Broke In,” premiering today on B-Sides & Badlands, was an understandably “therapeutic song for me to write,” Kelleher shares, “and I feel like I’ve been wanting to make this song subconsciously for so long.”
Orbs of musical light scatter around her voice, contrasting and complimenting her deep rasp. Interestingly, Kelleher wrote the song as a reflection on being told “something was medically wrong with my voice” by those around her. Those words cut deep, making her “really self-conscious and scared.”
“I went to several different vocal doctors and was told that my voice was perfectly healthy,” she continues. “I then realized that I needed to own my sound, which is such a personal part of who we are as humans, especially for me—singing is my whole life and has been since I was a little kid. Now, I know who I am and own it every time I sing or speak.”
Guitar flaps in an effervescent gusts, Kelleher’s voice riding the melody with ease and calm. It’s an equally soothing and empowering number as it is musically addicting. In turning over her past, like stepping stones lining a riverbank, she uncovers even greater and more marvlous beauty in being alive and using her voice. “I deserve to be heard, so imma dig a little deeper,” she vows.
“Broke In” (co-written with Dylan Rockoff) follows 2021’s Songs So Far EP and a sequence of singles this year, including “Question It.”
