“Get busy living or get busy dying.” Those words were famously spoken by Tim Robbins, playing Andy Dufresne in 1994’s Shawshank Redemption. His life teeter-totters on the balance beam, always on the edge of falling either way, but he’s seemingly powerless to stop his eventual fate. Undergoing his own version of such intense melancholy and strain, Colorado folk singer-songwriter Steve Itterly frames his new song called “Livin'” between the layers of the choice he must make. “If you must know the secrets, then you must feel them tremors and quakes,” he sings. His disposition is heavy, yet somehow curdling in the sun, and his acoustic guitar is his only saving grace through an especially trying time in his life. The odds have been stacked against him, but he perseveres in a way that is altogether empowering.
“Livin'” samples Itterly’s new EP, House Songs, out everywhere now.
