Premiere: The Blue Iris circles the drain like a ‘Daily Dysphoric Mess’
The punk/rock performer opens the casket of online validation and self worth.
Especially if you’re queer, dysphoria is an unfortunate experience clouding even the most trivial tasks. Your days deteriorate gray and brittle, as though you’re being forced through a press machine. “Daydreaming of being… someone else,” The Blue Iris heaves a final breath in the last second. It’s the culmination of a bone-rattling performance that yanks up the floorboards, inch by inch. Premiering on B-Sides & Badlands today, “Daily Dysphoric Mess” (pre-save here) oozes mental ooze, and the listener must then writhe around before climbing out of the ever-rising goo levels.
“I’m so sick of feeling like all I need is just another like to love myself and feel right,” howls the punk/rock daredevil. They circle the drain that is social media, clawing for the next viral post that’ll inject enough serotonin into the brain stem. “Then, I get on my phone, and I like like like like!” The rat race is perhaps “better like this,” they suggest, even if the price is way too high to pay. “I’m just feeling drained and being honest / It’s never ending / I can’t take it.”
“Daily Dysphoric Mess,” dropping this Saturday (September 10) with an accompanying music video, features Gwen Patton on bass and vocal contributions from Beth Rivera, Vi Viana, Veronica Prudence, and Niko Valcich. Following up “Body Regardless” and last year’s The Loneliness album (read our review), the track will not only hit streaming but will be up for free download via BandCamp. Very Magic Mirror-esque single artwork was created by B Ser.
