When you’re young, there’s certainly fewer inhibitors to what you can and can’t do. As many 20-somethings are apt to do, you test your limits and push the envelope as far as life will allow. In that same breath, sometimes getting lost in the thrill seeking, your moral compass reconfigures itself. Self-described Heartland rock, bending clearly into straight whiskey-chaser Americana, Illinois sibling duo The Cerny Brothers juggle such a dichotomy with their high-rolling saloon-spooled song. “Don’t want no drama,” the pair pout over tenaciously-unruly piano keys and guitar work. “Hey, Jesus, let me go / I don’t want my picture on Music Row,” their bold declarations spill onto the stage. The cheekiness of lyric and style is infectious and displays a great knack for showmanship ⏤ without skimping on a meaty message to satiate the bones.
“Laugh at the Devil” is ripped from the duo’s new album, Looking for the Good Land, out everywhere now.
