Taste Test: The Matinee tell it like it is on new barn-burner, ‘Trouble Is’
The roots-rock band plead for connection amidst a phone-glued generation.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
We’re fish gurgling and swimming in and out of black screens. And there’s little we can do about it ⏤ or so talking heads in those black screens tell us. Roots-rock band The Matinee ⏤ comprised of Matt Layzell (vocals), Matt Rose (guitar, pedal steel, banjo, mandolin), Pete Lemon (drums), and Geoff Petrie (guitar, percussion) ⏤ weep for today’s rising generation. Upon watching a new documentary called Selfless, the four-piece poured all their riled-up emotions into a song called “Trouble Is,” a flame-charred bluesy little number. “Now there’s an indication there’s been some erosion / Can you give me something better / Can you give me some emotion,” Layzell quakes so violently even his vocal is stitched with a boiling rage. But his performance is never defensive; rather, he’s exasperated and pleads for connection.
