An understanding of alcoholism as a disease has certainly opened up in recent years. But there remains considerable emotional barriers in how to navigate, especially within a family and from the outside looking in. Those conversations are confrontational and uncomfortable, and indie pop duo TOLEDO attempts to bridge the gap. “Sunday Funday” goes down smooth, yet its lyrical weight knocks the breath out of your lungs. “But you’re crying sober / Cause Sunday’s over / I’m trying to handle it as tight as I can,” they sing. Almost ethereal rings flutter over their heads, and as agonizing as it can be, there is hope to be had.
