Taste Test: Tommy Ocean dives headfirst with new song ‘Sometimes’

Blog favorite and folksy storyteller questions his own journey in life with a new song.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Imagine yourself 90 years old and on your death bed. What will you regret? Will you regret never having taken a risk or two? Will your entire existence seem a flash in the pan? Or will you bask in your gusto to live on the edge, allowing yourself to be spontaneous and the consummate risk-taker? Well, folk singer-songwriter Tommy Ocean provokes such an existential series of questions on his new song “Sometimes,” a gurgling creek tumbling down the mountainside and gushing of life and joy. “What will remain after leaving planet earth / A bitter taste / Or a shiny smile,” he sings. His frankness in lyrics is paired satisfyingly with simple production of pitter-patter drum work and a harmonica’s hopeful wail, and as he untangles his own journey, the listener can’t help but mull over their very own in the process.

“Sometimes” is the latest in a string of superb singles this year alone, on the heels of the more recent “Revolution.”
