A siren wails in the distance, zooming right past the eardrums. Meanwhile, Waves_On_Waves douses you with skittering ’80s synths, rays of neon light bouncing off your face. “I guess we’re gonna play nice,” he sings, his voice evaporating into the mix. “Lightning Strikes Twice” envelopes every part of your being. “Howling at the moon / It’s safe to assume / We don’t need a room / We’re making love at the Black Lagoon,” he continues. He unfurls the images with nonchalance, as though nothing is of particular interest. Yet the soundscape reverberates against the skin like a marching band. It’s urgent and inescapable. What the singer/songwriter/producer manages to do is nothing short of exhilarating.
