Starting again requires far more than choosing to make that leap. Undergoing dark, tumultuous times characterizes the moments leading up to a fresh new beginning. With their latest song “Start Again,” Wax Owls capture the beauty in feeling the “light come in” once the storm has cleared. There might still be clouds in the sky, but it’s just a matter of time before those too dissipate and there’s nothing but blue sky in their place. Gerry Hirschfeld, who co-wrote the song with Better Than Ezra’s Kevin Griffin, sings with command, driving the lyrics into the eardrums like rivets on a sailboat. “The darkness is deceiving / You’re all alone / You need it / We need it,” promises Hirschfeld. He relinquishes some control and effectively allows life to happen to him. It’s a new dawn, after all.
