Taste Test: Whatever We Are feel the rush with new song, ‘Old Car’
The electro-pop band learn to push through the pain on a new song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
We are similar to beat-up automobiles. We’ve worn the tires down to flaps of rubber; the bumper is askew; and the windshield is cracked around the edges, caked in mud and bug guts. Yet the purr of the engine revs just as well. Electro-pop four-piece Whatever We Are – of Gabrielle Ross, Chris Michaud, Joey Castellani, and Ian Biggs – draw parallels of a car that’s seen better days and what it means to keep pushing through heartbreak, pain, and whatever else the world has hurled their way. “Old Car” pulses from the inside out, adorned with vocal distortion, heavy synth slaps, and a lyrical tinge of great anthemic quality. “Why don’t we take a chance?” is a frank inquiry, but one which propels the entire song barreling forward onto the horizon. Life awaits, and WWA are our guides.
