Mental health is like being trapped in a snow globe. But instead of flakes of faux snow floating and cascading around inside the glassy orb, it’s broken window pane, freshly-sharpened butcher knives and an abundance of other skin-cutting instruments. Some are objects ripe for self-inflection, others are outside forces bearing down upon us. Mixing folk and gospel, Americana barn-stormer Wilder Woods makes quite a monumental statement with one of his first ever singles. With “Someday Soon,” pinned with crackling acoustic guitar underneath a bed of choral harmony work and organ, the singer and songwriter tries to calm his fevered, unruly emotional damage before the setting sun. “Don’t let the shame tell you something / That you know ain’t true,” he sings as an earnest confessional before the eyes of the whole world. In convincing himself that tomorrow is, in fact, a brand new day, one that’ll bring healing and a plethora of rich possibilities, he rushes to remind us all that it will be OK in the very end.
“Someday Soon,” alongside his other single “Sure Ain’t,” whets the appetite for his debut LP on Atlantic Records, out later this year.
