Comparisons to other artists and their work is rarely meant to devalue the art itself. It often operates as merely a jumping off point, a reference by which we can align similar styles, themes, and vocal theatrics. So, when you listen to Yorxe‘s debut offering – “Down with Me” unlocks a deep, spooky Billie Eilish throb, perfectly polished but with a grimy, horror-pop screech – you can’t help but carve out her place next to pop’s current reigning star. Make no mistake, though, Yorxe rosins up her own uniquely poison-tipped bow, and her voice is totally her own. “Don’t bite your tongue when you’re angry at me / ‘Cause you’ll bite it right off when you see what you see,” she paints in sharp, macabre detail. The melody laces up with arsenic, and the blood-curdling grind twists and scrapes as a knife across concrete.

Out of Cape Town, South Africa, Yorxe goes right for the jugular – and “Down with Me” is so impressive, it’ll shock you into a catatonic state. The song serves as “a tribute to the struggles of dating someone unorthodox,” she writes to B-Sides & Badlands over email. The accompanying visual is delightful and campy fun, utilizing frenetic camera angles, vampire-approved clip art, and fonts that gurgle in true Rocky Horror Picture Show fashion. “That’s just who I am,” she snaps her jaw. Her words catch in her throat, and the nightmarish percussion rattles the rib cage before breaking every single bone. “I’m going to take you down below / Everyone better run when they know,” she points a metaphorical flair gun into the sky. Her warnings are too addicting, however, and as Dracula’s victims are inclined to do, we draw closer and await a brutal demise.

Yorxe’s debut single “Down with Me” drenches in darkness and will never let you go. In the meantime, you better hit that dive-bar dance floor and wash it all away.
