Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

They never teach you how to cope when you lose someone close. You can snap off the pain like barnacles, crumbling and broken bone fragments, but it’ll always grow back. Time, of course, is the ultimate solvent, but even then, it never fully alleviates the ache. Oslo’s nine-piece collective Benedikt wash their bodies in an enveloping, boundless fountain as a way to cope and redeem the remaining parts of their hearts. With “Old Friends,” trickling with banjos and orchestral string work, the band offers up a glinting ray of hope through all of the pain. The mental fog slowly lifts, just a peek beneath the blankets, and the earth is aglow with redemption and solace. “Every day fades away / Every day stays the same,” they heave. Their bones remain quite brittle, but there’s a command bouncing off their eyelids. It’ll all be OK eventually.
