There is something earth-shattering about HeartMouth‘s gravel-soaked tenor. It grabs your heart, clutching it tighter and tighter with every vocal turn, and you may collapse from sheer exhaustion trying to escape. His new song “Be Alright” is no exception; in fact, it contains one of the indie singer-songwriter’s most ferocious performances to-date. “Is it over yet?” he puts such an inquiry on an endless loop. As tangible words escape him, leaving ashy fingerprints on your earlobes, you become forever lost into a mesmeric haze. What a way to jumpstart 2020.

The moment I witnessed the greatness of Oh Wonder at the 2016 Panorama Music Festival, I was hooked. Then promoting their 2015 self-titled debut, the electro-pop duo carve through glacial production with crystal clear lyrics that crack the outer shell of human nature. Now, with their new song “Happy,” glistening as newly-fallen snow, they’ve learned what it means to let go and recover from heartbreak. “Never thought I’d be happy to see you with somebody new,” they curl their vocals around the hook – cathartic and redemptive. Their happiness grows from a deep desire to cherish well-being above all else, and with a magnificent orchestral-laced arrangement, they arrive right at the threshold.
