Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.
We somehow live in a world where Astrid S isn’t a bigger star. But what can you do about it? Give her new song “The First Song” adds all over the internet, that’s what. As the title suggests, the incandescent electro-pop jam lingers on her first love and lets the flood of past emotions rise and swallow her whole. “I gave too much to the first one / No, there ain’t nothing I can do about it,” she sings as a final resignation to the pain that continues to gurgle in her chest. Time can heal…or not. It’s a gamble we all must live with, so turn up Astrid S and weep on the bathroom floor if you need to. We won’t judge.
Jeremy Thurber finally graces our eardrums with the Sadie-featuring new thumper called “THIS IS US.” Acoustic guitar sews the synths together in a stunning patchwork of styles, bending between R&B and electro-pop while staying firmly on the ground. “I know it ain’t right / But you’re by my side / Darkest tonight / Now, you’re mine,” the chorus flutters between the tango, a dangerous one at that. It’s not healthy, but the web is too sticky to escape. So, the lovers settle for the adventure raging between their spheres; even so, there’s a rush of adrenaline that fuels them alway sin each other’s orbits. It’s fate.
My Silent Bravery (real name Matthew Wade) pushes the pedal to the metal with his new single. The unknown closing in on his shoulders, he packs up his entire life and zooms across country for love. With “Hey Miss,” a folksy pop elixir heavy on drums, he slips out the back door and lets unquenchable desire overcome his mind, body and spirit. “Woke up in a town without a name / These motel rooms all look the same / One look around and I’m gone / But I’ll be back before too long,” he sings in matter-of-fact fashion. And in effect, he floats away as effortlessly as the breeze itself and vanishes in the rustle of gravel on the highway.
Glossy pop players The Millennial Club soak the senses in sunshine all across their debut EP. She’s So Insane is splattered with love and loss, thrills and chills, evocative gravity and cotton-candy clouds. Clocking in at over five minutes, cinematic cut “MI” dances inside a prism of ’80s synth-pop and new wave and seems to curl into the eardrums. “I miss your face,” whispers frontman Andrews Owens from the other side. Saxophone swiftly and severely bubbles to the surface, underscoring the Santa Barbara band’s penchant for lush, extravagant pop craftsmanship. Synths twinkle, keys trembling, and the choir of voices guide us right up into the heavens.
The newest playlist also includes essentials from Sweetheart, Max George, Will Bennett & the Tells, Bobby Stevens, Kate Vargas, David Morris, Emmrose, Marina City, Leah Turner, Ryan Thompson & the Delicate Hounds, The Lark & the Loon, Alpha Chrome Yayo, Kalin White and countless more.
