Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.

The enchantment with disco never died. Even as the pop sub-genre faded in the ’80s, we’ve never forgotten the funk-kissed ripples it caused, cascading outward into every corner of mainstream music. Even today, you can find neon-hued remnants, from Bruno Mars and Pharrell Williams to Justin Timberlake, and within Goldilox’s throwback, dance-party aesthetic, she plays and sashays and twirls with abandon. “I Love You,” the lead single to her forthcoming album, Very Best, out tomorrow, sparkles and ricochets like splintered light off a disco ball. Goldilox (real name Kristin Boutilier) combines the provocative assertions of Goldie Hawn with the blinding smolder of Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor and Diana Ross.

“Lights out / Baby you could turn my lights out / I’ve been waiting for so long / For someone to turn me on,” she sings, splashing around in a descending flood of groovy guitar licks and hand claps. “Right now / Everyone is staring right now / But baby lets keep dancing on / Even after they’re gone.” She rises triumphantly into the glittering fog, her hair flipping every which way. Her voice grounds her centerstage, and you can’t help but follow her lead without hesitation. “I might as well go blind / If i can’t see you all the time / If i can’t have you, have you.”

While also drawing up such influences as Marvin Gaey, Goldilox carves out her own path. “Women had never been so strong and idolized during that period in music,” she noted about the music of yesteryear, thrusting its way through a modern-sized lens. “And on top of it, the revolution was all about fun. The first single is all about the moment when someone tells you ‘I Love You,’ and time essentially stops.”

In the accompanying visual, she embarks on a magnificent ’70s extravaganza. The costumes. The hair. The vibe. All of it is rinsed and dipped in a haze of 40 years ago. We’re living in the Age of Nostalgia, and while there is an ease with which Goldilox embodies a bygone era, it is further sweetened by time’s loving caress.
