Welcome to The Singles Bar, a review series focused on new single and song releases.

Falling in love is an unspoken pact. It’s stolen secrets whispered in the dead of night. It’s the silence that’s so loud, you giggle and hold your lover’s skin closer to your chest. It’s the richness of life that sends a smile curling your lips in broad, vibrant strokes. It’s weathering the storm that threatens to crack the foundation. When you find that special someone who makes you weak in the knees but leaves you feeling utterly powerful, count yourself blessed. Americana duo Goldschatz ⏤ of musicians, singers and songwriters Timothy Jaromir and Christina Rieder ⏤ wield their sharp penmanship with a bite-sized and delicious morsel of romance.

“Thick as Thieves,” which is impressively their debut single together, brandishes true love for the whole wide world to partake. It sits in the side-pocket of blues and folk, combed nicely and tightly with penetrating harmony work. They color just outside the lines to flush your cheeks with pastel pinks and reds, and you never get the sense of being overwhelming with too much sugar. “Oh, honey, when you’re going down, you can count on me to come around / Oh, sugar, it’s a crowded house, and you can count on me to drive you wild,” they warble in the breeze, as the speakers hiss, the window rustling the bobble head doll on the dash, and the sun cutting across their eyes. The world lays at their feet, and as they barrel down the highway, freedom fills their lungs and their fates become even more intertwined. It’s ride or die at this point.

Ever-present within the song, the love-struck pair wrote the toe-tapping crowd pleaser while out on their honeymoon, winding through the adventurous backwoods of the South in the backseat of a car. That warm sensibility envelopes the melody, striking at the most basic level of humanity with ripened compassion and a sweet, fascinating shimmer. “Oh, honey, when you’re going down, you can count on me to bail you out,” they later avow, bonds growing increasingly thicker as the song progresses. It’s undeniably infectious, and with the autumn waxing orange and brown, it’ll certainly rejuvenate your bones ahead of the bitter winter months.

“Thick as Thieves” samples the duo’s forthcoming debut record, Salt of the Sea, currently in the works.
