Taste Test: Ian Abel serves up a haunting angry commentary on society in ‘Fragile Man’

The neo-soul artist won’t hold back in this painfully relevant single

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Police brutality, sexism and inequality are seemingly an always-present scourge upon society. It is no surprise then that despite being written in 2018, Ian Abel’s Fragile Man is more relevant today then it ever has been. This song begins with haunting synth sounds accompanying discordant unsettling vocals, really emphasising the tone of the subject matter. The chorus lyrics are especially striking. “Fragile man/how can you stand on my neck/and pretend that you’re the one hurting/you’re the one hurting” Abel questions, shadowed by ethereal harmonies. In addition to providing a powerful commentary on the current state of society, Abel is also dedicating the proceeds of this track to marginalised communities in America. Hopefully one day, songs like this will not be so relevant any more.
