A breaking point can be difficult to unlock. The soul aches for a cathartic release, and the road to such a blissful state is a long, winding one. Nashville’s indie-pop singer-songwriter Kenna chronicles her journey with her new video for “Floodgates,” a genre-blurring ode to replenishment and escape. “We found a space for all this pain,” sings Kenna, breaking the ceiling of her own anguish and twisting it into a glorious anthem.

“Feel it in you now / It’s releasing / Lay your guard down,” she vows on the chorus, which seems to hang like frozen rain in the air. The accompanying music video, premiering today, taps into the overwhelming flood and release of emotions, mirrored in the downpour splashing across the screen. Helmed by director Andrea Schollnick, a freelance videographer in Music City, the intimately-drawn visual weaves between performance-style footage of Kenna on a bridge overlooking the Nashville cityscape and Becca Richardson, portraying the pivotal character, finding her way in the world.

Kenna, who picked up the guitar at 12 and later studied at Berklee College of Music, punctures her heart and allows the melody to be swallowed whole. “It’s the truth / You can’t wish it away / Keep the floodgates open wide,” she urges, as the production swirls between shimmering pop, indie-folk and the lushness of Music Row. She pieces together such varied styles into an intoxicating mix, thanks in large part to producer and co-writer Jared Anderson, whose pedigree includes work with Jason Isbell and others.

“Floodgates” is the second primer for Kenna’s forthcoming new EP, in the grey, expected next month.
