Welcome to Hook & Reel, a series showcasing music that’s guaranteed to catch your ear.

Does anyone else remember the heyday of VH1’s You Oughta Know, back in the mid aughts? I do ⎯⎯ I specifically remember waking up Saturday and Sunday mornings in high school, immediately turning on VH1 to watch their music video broadcasts, looking for new You Oughta Know spotlights. VH1 always had a knack for highlighting talent that turned emotive rock into radio ready pop, but with a homegrown twist. Songs from the likes of the Jack’s Mannequin, Regina Spektor, Paolo Nutini, The Fray and KT Tunstall would have me swaying blissfully in the middle of my parents’ living room while my cereal was left unattended on the coffee table. They had a way of making my heart ache in a way that was liberating, that felt real.

When I first heard LPX’s new single “Might Not Make It Home” earlier today, I immediately thought of the music that made those weekend mornings so magical. The crunchy guitar that cuts through the intro of the song, the way her rough and warm voice learns into the gritty, lively instrumentation, the well-framed snapshot of a night of neon-lit debauchery surrounded by the people you love, it all comes effortlessly together to create a euphoric sugar rush of timeless, stadium-sized grunge pop. Best of all, the fist pumping hook is made complete with a chorus of voices singing sweet jubilation to the stars and beyond. It’s a testament to Lizzy Palpinger’s burgeoning status as a rock star, pop star and her cemented status as a tastemaker for exceptional sound. Which shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, given she co-founded one of the greatest modern pop labels of our generation, Neon Gold Records.
