The quiet moments make life worth living. Basking in the present, Melanie MacLaren reinvents Loudon Wainwright III’s 1973 “The Swimming Song” while keeping the joyous sensibility intact. “This summer I did swan dives / And jack knives for you all,” she sings over acoustic guitar and the woohoos of swimmers in the pool. “And once when you weren’t looking / I did a cannonball.” Water gurgles in the arrangement, adding a sense of time and place to the performance. But it’s never overwrought or half-baked. MacLaren commits, and it’s rather infectious.
