“The road was filled with broken glass and gasoline,” sings Rod Gator in his emotional, raw cover. Bruce Springsteen’s “Highway 29” finds new life in Gator’s hands, calloused and dirty. His rasp brings out a visceral response to the lyrics. They become more biting, more intense, and more razor-sharp. Acoustic guitar cries out behind him, tugging his voice along like a set of tin cans on the back of a pickup truck. We just don’t talk about Rod Gator nearly enough.
