Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.

Summer brings sticky sunbathing on sandy beaches, the sweet aroma of barbecue on the grill, sparklers against a starry July 4th backdrop and the sweltering heat of the early August sun. We might still be gasping for breath in the dead of winter, but frolicking Toronto rock band Sun K inject the practically-frozen northern hemisphere with a bit of temperature with their new new video, “High in the City.” It’s shot entirely in a home-footage style, a visual exemplifying their outlandishly spirited shenanigans and is caked in delirious starbursts of exposure. “From time to time, I let my mind wander / Keeps me from going insane / Smoke parliament mild, drag right down to the filter tip / ‘Coz everything looks the same,” frontman Kristian Montano puffs on the opening lines, outlining his embedded angst for the thrill of the open air and breeze to fill his aching lungs.

He continues to set the scene, spliced with granular early images at the beach and the park, the greenery seeming to sparkle in the light, “So I walked a mile, lookin’ through another’s eyes / It’s a mysterious dream / Show me the lies, rip through cut me down to size / I think i’m torn at the seams.” Classic rock guitars bubble and splash against each other in stark waves, as if bouncing off the glass-like surface of the ocean. The band makes their way in and out of various hot-spot Toronto locales, from the appetizing park water fountain to beneath the twinkling spin of the carousel at the fair. The video, directed by Laura-Lynn Petrick, plays with camera work in an equally happy-go-lucky charm, magnetizing and somehow artistically framed. The hook pounds the eardrums in relentless punches, “We get high in the city / We get high every day / Gonna die in this city / And hide from the day.”

“High in the City,” off their latest studio album, Bleeding Hearts, is a bellowing underdog ritual, an anthem of really living and embracing the world around them. “The music video is all about the quintessential summer day in Toronto with friends,” explains the band. “We met up with Laura-Lynn and hopped on a boat to the island to drink beers, take a dip, have a rip, light some fireworks (among other things) and in general get a little weird with friends.”
