Major corporate conglomerates are infamous in lacking empathy or basic decency. Look at the catastrophic C8 tragedy that occurred along the Ohio River Vally. In summary, a company called Dupont dumped the toxic chemical known as C8 into the Ohio River (pollutants from the factory also contaminating the air in Parkersburg, West Virginia) for decades. A settlement of $670 million was reached in 2017, but the damage had been down to countless people in the form kidney cancer, testicular cancer and other side effects. Gary Douglas, who fronts The Gary Douglas Band, served as co-counsel on the case, alongside Rob Bilott, and he tells the story with a new song. “Deep in the Water,” accompanied with a dusty and spooky visual, is a deadly southern gothic tell that frames the truth as plainly and profoundly as possible. Through skeleton face-paint and a generally somber, ghost-glued filter, he employs sinister metaphors and imagery to cut even deeper – to great effect. “Hey Devil with your suit and tie / I know your wicked little game,” sings Douglas, his voice snapping in succinct lashes.
