Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.

The first step to sobriety is admitting you have a problem. Identifying the culprit, the one with its grubby hands ’round your veiny throat, can lead you to redemption and a new way of viewing the world. Pop-rock favorite The Sweet Kill (real name Pete Mills) steps fearlessly across the threshold to recovery with the high-octane, drum-driven rallying cry “Powerless,” containing one of his most undeniably-sticky melodies to-date. “The boulevard has broken my dreams / I had so much to give / Now, I’m over it / I got so many scars / Nobody can save me now,” he falls to his knees as his very last resort, shredding away the facade for an unapologetic moment of vulnerability. Rhythms splinter through his chest, paired with a prayer escaping his lips even as he continues to wrangle his addiction-addled heartstrings. “I swore off before, oh no / Just one more hit…,” he later howls. His honesty is contagious, and laced with such a mesmerically-designed arrangement, there’s no avoiding the inevitable rush of adrenaline.

“Powerless” is found on Mills’ latest EP, Love & Death, out everywhere now.
