Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Names like James Dean and Audrey Hepburn evoke the dazzling mystery of Hollywood’s Golden Age. It was a time of glitz and glamour, further punctuating the great American dream and the race for fame and fortune. Dark-pop newcomer Ariane guns for her own fantastic film-noir set-piece with a song called “American Movie,” in which she pinpoints obvious references to both Dean’s and Hepburn’s cinematic work. Slinky and silky, the song also makes stunning use of flashing backwards as she looks forward and peers into a looking glass for a dreamy waltz across time and styles with lush sensuality. “Cigarette in his mouth / I’d be playing with his heart so he holds on,” she coos. Born and raised in Paris, Ariane calls to her youth of vicariously living and breathing the Los Angeles lifestyle through her TV screen. Her imagination is one wrought of the classics, and in honoring the past, she sets herself up for quite a future breakout.
