In the vein of Vamp and Def by Temptation, Brooky Coon’s Axel’s Night soaks in color and mood lighting. We get so few horror films made by Black queer artists that it’s quite refreshing to see something so wonderfully seductive and gay and juicy. Produced by, written by, and starring Isaiah Rice, the delectable short leaves nothing to the imagination. It lures you in and won’t let you go until the credits roll. Even then, you won’t stop thinking about it.
Axel (Marc Bickerstaff), the lead guitarist of a rock band, wants a little fun. He swipes right on an obsessed fan named Blake (Rice), who has much more than sex on his mind. The two meet in a secluded room down from the concert venue. Blake flips on the supple mood lighting and does a pole dance for his new trick. What happens, though, is anything but.
Axel’s Night shows great promise for all involved. It’s perfectly naughty and bloody in all the right amounts. When it comes to Black queer horror writers, Isaiah Rice is one to watch. Stay tuned for her in-depth conversation coming soon!
