Taste Test: Beoga & Devin Dawson cherish every moment with ‘Matthew’s Daughter’

New wave band enlist the country upstart for a baptism down by the river with a new song.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.

It’s so easy to do the wrong thing in this world. We try as best we can, but we will inevitably, perhaps predictably, fall from grace. But it’s par the course, you see. Out of Ireland, new wave players Beoga (a traditionally-steeped quintet of Liam Bradley, Damian McKee, Sean Og Graham, Niamh Dunne and Eamon Murray) enter into a sphere of light with their new song “Matthew’s Daughter,” a baptismal reassurance of our very human faults. Relative country newcomer Devin Dawson soaks in the story to deliver a truly mesmerizing, gutting performance. The song, written by the band, along with Ed Sheeran and Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, trembles with palpable conviction. “Heaven knows I’m a sinner / And I’ve made mistakes,” confronts Dawson, who lays down his pain upon a golden altar. He searches his heart for the cracks, the remnants and the unwieldy darkness, and through his makeshift sacrifice, as he wades into the water, he reemerges pure and angelic.
