Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Even the past’s happiness and rose-colored memories can throw our present off balance. The truth of the matter is the past and present often become tangled and cut off oxygen; we need to trim the hedges and let both parts grow and then flourish separately. Blog staple Common Jack warms himself by clutching onto the past and downing another sweet amber elixir, coating his stomach and further heightening the buzzy surrealism flooding his brain. “Does it hurt when you hear my name / When you smile, does it feel the same / Are you lonely or just alone,” he offers up a string of inquiries, more to himself than anything. His diary like confessional is draped with weary detail across acoustic-wrought production, melancholic and heavy. He’s pulled his scars as a acid-washed denim jacket up and over his shoulders, and while that might be a toxic decision, it’s what the current moment requires. Only time can deliver him.

“Uptown” kickstarts his new EP, Canyons in the Dark, out everywhere now.
