Cyrena Wages hisses with the venom of a thousand vipers. “I roll your love letters into cigarettes,” she sings, tangling her voice around the melody in “Love Letters.” Her eccentric rasp serves her well. And the arrangement borrows from the Southern Gothic tradition, like a Bobbie Gentry song. Wages lets the lyrics snap and spit, never relinquishing the misery of heartbreak. Sometimes, pettiness is deserved on the culprit. “I’m a black widow in a wedding dress,” she imparts in the song’s smoldering build-up.
“Love Letters” samples her new album, Miss Melancholia, out now.
