The Sweeplings quench that Civil Wars thirst. There’s a brittle crackle, as a once-roaring campfire descends into ashy embers, to their poetic, raw push and pull. The rope which binds them frays in time, but they remain the one constant. With their new song “In Between,” Whitney Dean and Cami Bradley suspend uncertainty and angst as they, too, are lost in a purgatory of sorts. An acoustic guitar is their only life line, and wide brushstrokes permit them further agency to expose deeply troubling and tortured meditations. “Here between the night and day / Lost and never swept away,” they crow. The performance is visceral, clawing at the elbows, and they further demonstrate their sheer power.

Perched at the polar opposite, a musicality that is equal parts groovy, grainy, and sticky, Terry Ohms‘ new entry “All in the Past” strains with a troubled past, lost time, and mistakes. “I should have taken a breath / I can’t take it back,” he sings. His vocal wavers as he continues to cope and accept with what he did, and in such heaviness, linked with funk-fashioned guitar and other starry production, acceptance inches closer to being his reality. It’s a model of catharsis, often grinding through more eclectic, spacey influences, to arrive upon what’ll be his saving grace.
