Freshly Squeezed, Vol. 167: Saffron A, Semler, The Deep West & more

Enjoy new songs from Sad Night Dynamite, Pale Waves, Sugar Fitz, Rebecca Black, and more1

Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.

We live in a world where consent has somehow become a lightning rod. I mean, I know how it happened: cis white men have it in their thick skulls they’re entitled to everything. Anyway, blog favorite Saffron A gives a two-minute lesson in consent with the aptly-titled new song “Consent 101,” a grimy indie-rock jingle that’ll creep right into your eardrums. “No means no / Yes means yes,” she sings. “We will not settle for less.” Oh, later on, the musician addresses body signals: “When you feel my body freeze, that means stop!” It’s really not that hard, bros.

Like we don’t deserve Semler. She has a way to cut you deep in her songwriting, and her new EP, Preacher’s Kid, is no different. For any LGBTQ+ person who’s been severely traumatized by a religious upbringing, particularly in the Christian church, it’s an eight-track release that may very well be triggering to some. Semler excavates hard conversations, as she does on “Jesus from Texas,” a setpiece on which she struggles to understand a higher power’s intent. “I believe in Big Foot more than God,” she sings over rootsy acoustic guitar. Her voice is enough to hit you right across the face. What a body of work.

The playlist also includes The Deep West, Rebecca Black, Maren Morris, Pale Waves, Sad Night Dynamite, The Darcys, Sugar Fitz, That Brunette, Rue Snider, and more!

In all, we’ve got 30 new tracks to soothe your mind during these terrible pandemic times. Insert heart emoji.

Each playlist will be refreshed every Friday or Saturday. We reserve the right to update anytime during the week, so make sure you bookmark this page.
