Record Revue: Georgie Najar – Need to Know EP

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

There’s a very clear reason Georgie Najar closes out her new EP with “My Obsession with Love”: it’s her best song. The scorching torch ballad bookends Need to Know, a four-track wrecking ball of vocal prowess and thoughtful songwriting. Her voice peels the mind, particularly on “My Obsession with Love,” possessing a visceral rawness akin to “Paint It, Black” by The Rolling Stones or “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Najar leaves it all on the floor, pulsing with the gooey blood of a fever dream.

“When you touch my body, thoughts turn off,” she sings in the opener and title cut. “Knowing that my body’s all you’ll ever want.” From the get-go, Najar digs her teeth into the material with a monstrous bite. Her strawberry-rasp colors her words and tints them with a signature rosy glow. Some things are taught, but gifts come naturally. Even here, in a more subtle melody, she soars through the syllables with a frenzy, almost atomic.

Elsewhere, “Raincoats” and “Whatever” rain down like mist. Their more subdued nature helps Najar showcase the full breadth of her vocal range. Not every song needs to be an acrobatic act. There are necessary moments that require the blast of mere quiet.

Georgie Najar’s Need to Know EP (out now) feels like a career-making record. It’s incisive, unapologetic, and damn near perfect. There’s really no telling where Najar will go next.
