Telling your truth is something no one can take away from you. Confronting a traumatic past, singer-songwriter Kate Vogel reclaims the narrative and shares the cruelty, abuse, and emotional havoc she endured. With “The Truth,” she first flicks through the ashes of sexual assault with a sharp blade. “So, I lost years over this,” she weeps. “Can you tell me what I’ve gained? / I’m just a number to him / Now everybody’s whispering, ‘What was she wearing? What was she drinking?'” Vogel’s voice pushes through the pain, and her act of bravery could literally save another life, as much as her own. Songs like this are unequivocally crucial.
